The Dallas Arts District Announces “Summer Block Party”
The public is invited to experience the Dallas Arts District after the sun sets at Summer Block Party! Flora Street will be closed for traffic and transformed for this special street festival featuring art, concerts, dining and activities taking place simultaneously on the street and throughout the three museums. Grab a bite to eat from street vendors parked on Flora, or head into one of the museums for additional dining and beverage options. Experience the culture of all three museums with guided tours and special social media challenges throughout the night.

Where: Dallas Arts District; The festivities will take place on and around Flora Street and throughout the Crow Collection of Asian Art, Dallas Museum of Art, and Nasher Sculpture Center.

There will be one tweet every 30 minutes (three tweets total) with the hastag #ArtHunt providing a clue to where to find a work of art. Grab a token at each work; be the first to find all three works of art and you could win a membership to all three museums. Joint tickets to the Nasher and DMA are available for $16.
8 pm Progressive Museums Tour
Experience a roving tour highlighting art from all three museums. Tour begins at the Admissions Desk at the Nasher Sculpture Center.
8:15 pm Performance by Calhoun
Blending folk, rock and pop genres effortlessly, Calhoun envelopes the listener within their music and lyrics as wide open as the Texas landscape.
10:30 pm Performance by Luna Matto
When she’s not onstage with The Polyphonic Spree, Luna Matto will bring her sultry vocals and poetic lyrics to the Flora St. café stage.

6 pm Performance: Dallas Kiyari Daiko, Flora Street Kick off the 2011 Summer Block Party in the Dallas Arts District with a bang featuring a Japanese drumming performance by Dallas Kiyari Daiko.6:30 – 7 pm Chinese Children’s Bedtime Stories, Mezzanine Cozy up on a cushion and enjoy classic Chinese children’s tales inspired by the new exhibition Dream Chamber: Chinese Bedroom Furniture from the 17th to 19th Century.
6 – 8 pm Chill Bubble Tea, Trammell Crow Center Plaza Cool off with complimentary samples of bubble tea, a favorite treat across Asia. Supplies limited; full-sized beverages are available at the discounted rate of $3 each.
6 – 8 pm Art Activity: Prayer Flag Impressions, Flora Street Prayer flags are found strung along mountain ridges high in the Himalayas to bless the surrounding countryside. In partnership with Booker T. Washington High School, design a prayer flag inspired by the exhibition Tradition Transformed: Tibetan Artists Respond. Supplies limited.
6 – 8 pm Art Activity: OHMazingTM Fans, Flora Street Keep cosmically cool and decorate a fan with the ancient symbol of AUM (pronounced OHM), believed to represent the sound of the universe that connects us all.
6 – 9 pm Games in the Garden, Snuff Bottle Court Enjoy a refreshing cup of iced green tea and play games from across Asia in the tranquil surroundings of the Crow Collection of Asian Art’s Snuff Bottle Court.
7 pm Performance in the Galleries: Bharata Natyam, Grand Gallery Enjoy an Indian classical dance performance by Ahila Gulasekaram inspired by the exhibition Fabled Journeys in Asian Art.
7:45 pm Performance: Chinese Dragon Dance, Flora Street Enjoy a spectacular 65-foot Chinese dragon dance with performers from JK Wong Kungfu Tai Chi Academy.
10 pm Japanese Cosplay Fashion Show, Grand Gallery Presented in partnership with the Dallas A-KON Convention Cosplay, or costume play, is popular in Japan where enthusiasts dress as their favorite anime, video game, or fictional characters. Join fellow anime-lovers, Harajuku Girls, and comic book fashionistas for this Japanese street fashion inspired show. Winners of the 2011 Next Top Cosplay Model competition will be announced at the end of the show! Hosted by DJ Woodtronic.
10:30 pm After Dark Karaoke with DJ Mark Ridlen, Grand Gallery Join DJ Mark Ridlen for a multimedia karaoke experience while sipping complimentary Asian beer. Supplies limited; must show proof of age to be served alcohol.

7 pm Thumbsucker (2005), Horchow Auditorium Directed by filmmaker and graphic artist Mike Mills, and based on the novel by Walter Kirn, this coming-of-age film is a “compassionate and amusingly skewed story about embracing your weirdness.” Starring Lou Taylor Pucci in the title role, Thumbsucker also features Tilda Swinton, Keanu Reeves, Vince Vaughn, Vincent d’Onofrio, and Benjamin Bratt and a soundtrack by The Polyphonic Spree. 8 pm Fresh Ink with Austin Kleon, C3 Theater Pick up your free tickets at the Will Call Table beginning at 7:00 p.m. in front of Horchow Auditorium. Following the program, there will be a book signing outside the Museum Store. Writer, artist, and visual thinker Austin Kleon will discuss his new way of reading between the lines with his Newspaper Blackout poetry. Following his presentation, join Kleon for a Newspaper Blackout poetry workshop in the Art Studio.
8 – 9 pm Creativity Challenge, Meet in the Center for Creative Connections Stretch your mind and test your creativity! Teams compete against time and with limited materials to design a unique creation inspired by artworks in the Museum’s collection. Limited to ten teams. Teams may sign up for the challenge in C3 starting at 7:30 p.m. for the 8:00 p.m. challenge.
9 pm Late Night Summer Concert featuring The Polyphonic Spree, Ross Avenue Plaza, Free Our Late Night summer concert series continues with the Dallas-based symphonic rock group The Polyphonic Spree!The Polyphonic Spree was formed in 2000 by Tim DeLaughter and since then they have been cutting a singular swath through the pop culture landscape, spreading a positive energy that makes people scratch their heads and ask questions while presenting music that’s colorful to the ears. The follow-up to 2004′s critically acclaimed Together We’re Heavy is the exciting album The Fragile Army, which finds The Polyphonic Spree on a creative high. Their songs, including the hit Light & Day/Reach for the Sun, have been featured in TV shows and movies such as Scrubs, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Thumbsucker, and Murderball, to name a few.
10 –11 pm Late Night After Hours Music Showcase featuring GalleryCat, Atrium Every Late Night, join us for our After Hours Music Showcase, which features alt-country, folk, acoustic, indie, rock, hip hop, alternative, and emerging bands from Texas. Tonight experience an amazing live performance with GalleryCat, a major player in the Dallas hip hop scene. GalleryCat released two albums in 2009, Bi-Polaroid and I’m Doing Fine, and was nominated in 2010 for the Dallas Observer Music Award for Best Rap/Hip Hop Act.Presented in partnership with KXT 91.7
10 pm NFL High School National Speech Finals of Storytelling, Horchow Auditorium The top six students from around the United States will perform their award-winning Native American stories inspired by the Art of the American Indians exhibition. Presented by Western Kentucky University

‘TIL MIDNIGHT AT THE NASHER
6 pm – midnight, Free with Museum Admission $10 for adults, $7 for seniors, $5 for students, and free for Members and children 12 and under (Show your ticket at the admissions desk from any AT&T Performing Arts Center performance during the third week of the month and receive half-price ($5) adult general admission to the Nasher’s ‘til Midnight.)
6 – 7 pm Bluegrass/Country Dance Lessons, Dance Floor, Nasher Garden Learn a few country dance moves and then try them out during the live concert.
7 – 9 pm Live Concert featuring Milo Deering Bluegrass Band, Garden Enjoy a live, toe-tapping 2-hour concert by Dallas’ Milo Deering Bluegrass Band. This talented duo and their acoustic kitchen band perform a homespun blend of folk, bluegrass and western- swing featuring originals and vintage covers played with inventive and whimsical arrangements.
9 – 11 pm Movie Presentation on Jumbo Screen, Garden Get comfy on the lawn for an outdoor, big-screen showing of O Brother, Where Art Thou?, the 2000 adventure comedy film starring George Clooney. Set in 1937 rural Mississippi during the Great Depression, the film’s story is a modern satire loosely based on Homer’s Odyssey.

This special artwork features an open aperture to the sky with a continuously changing light show that alters one’s perception of the sky.

Exhibitions On View:
Statuesque marks the institution’s first exhibition presented entirely outdoors. Featuring 10 large- scale sculptures, Statuesque brings together a dynamic group of six international artists – Pawel Althamer, Huma Bhabha, Aaron Curry, Thomas Houseago, Matthew Monahan and Rebecca Warren – whose work reveals a renewed significance of the figure in contemporary sculpture.
Sightings: Martin Creed features the installation Work 1190: Half the air in a given space, featuring a room filled with 9,000 gold balloons, and other select works.
Bodies Reconsidered: 150 Years of Figurative Sculpture in the Nasher Collection features an expanded reinstallation of the Nasher Collection that explores the human figure in sculpture over the last 150 years.
